How to read US gaming revenue reports

The short answer
Before comparing a US gaming revenue figure, identify the reporting population, the time period, and the definition of revenue. A large total with missing labels is an incomplete comparison.
In this article
A national-looking number can describe a narrower population than a headline implies. That matters in US gaming, where a reader may encounter totals prepared for different reporting groups, periods, and purposes. The useful work begins by restoring those labels before drawing a conclusion.
A historical figure with a defined scope
In its July 31, 2025 release, the National Indian Gaming Commission reported $43.9 billion in tribal gross gaming revenue for fiscal year 2024. The reported year-over-year increase was 4.6%. Those labels belong beside the figure: this is a historical tribal gaming release, not a 2026 total for every US gaming business.
Illustrative example
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Reporting body | Who compiled or released the number |
| Population | Which operations or activity are included |
| Period | The exact fiscal, calendar, or reporting interval |
| Measure | The source’s revenue definition and unit |
| Comparison | The prior period on the same basis |
Why a correct number can support a bad sentence
Consider an editor who copies the figure accurately but changes “fiscal year” to “this year.” The number has not been mistyped, yet the statement is wrong. Replacing the population with “the whole US market” creates a different error. Accuracy includes the words around a number, not only its digits.
The same caution applies to profitability. A revenue series is not a profit series. To discuss margins, an analyst would need costs and a compatible definition of profit. A headline total cannot supply information that the underlying measure does not contain.
Build a comparison that survives a source check
Put both figures into a two-column source sheet before calculating change. If periods, inclusion rules, or definitions differ, resolve the mismatch or explain why a like-for-like comparison is unavailable. Retain the source’s rounding and use its stated growth rate when the displayed totals are too rounded to reproduce it exactly.
